# Think You Can Pass This Third-Grade Maths Test? Think Again!

### Turns out 5 x 3 doesn't equal 15... huh?

We could all pass a year three maths test, right? Wrong!

A photo of a maths test has been uploaded online and it’s sparked a huge debate over what seems to be a very simple question.

The test in question asked kids to solve 5x3 using repeated addition.

The kid answered 5+5+5=15, but according to the teacher this was NOT right.

The teacher marked it wrong, and wrote ‘3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15’.

Um what? Isn’t that the same? Apparently not.

Commenters online say the teacher was laying foundations for more complicated maths in the future  - preparing them for when students have to multiply more complicated numbers.

One commenter took up the side of the student, saying, “As an instructor: f*** it. I am actually happy when I see people finding alternative ways to solve the problems.”

While another said, “Actually the teacher is correct. 5*3 means 5 times the number 3, or 3+3+3+3+3. Understand, we are not in the room when it was TAUGHT.”

Whoa. Maybe this explains why we always struggled with more complicated maths than this!
