Nutella Creator Passes Away On Valentine's Day

The man who gifted us with one of the most incredible chocolate spreads in the world, Michele Ferrero, has sadly died aged 89.

The billionaire and Italy's richest man had been battling illness for several months and passed away in Monte Carlo over the weekend on Valentine’s Day.

“Ferrero was a leading light in Italian business for many years, always managing to stay on trend thanks to his innovative products and his tenacious and cautious work. Italy remembers him with gratitude,” Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in a statement.

Ferrero’s father, a small-time pastry maker, was behind the original Nutella recipe and famously added hazelnut to the mix to save money on cocoa.

But it was Michele who transformed the moorish spread into the Nutella we all know and love today.

The Ferrero family, which is estimated by Forbes to be worth $A30.2 billion, is also behind tasty treats Ferrero Rocher, Mon Cheri and Kinder chocolates.
