The News Nutella Lovers Won't Wanna Hear
Claims that there will be shortage of Nutella has had fans of the hazelnut spread in a panic all over the world.
In Turkey, where almost 70% of the world's hazelnuts are grown, hail storms and frost has caused a large amount of the crops to be useless. This had lead to a price increase of more than 60%.
Hazelnuts have risen to almost $4,000 per tonne more than what they were before the storms in Turkey.
Ferrero, who make Nutella, buy 25% of the world's hazelnut supply so what will happen? Will there be a shortage? Do you need to stock up? Is it time to lock ourselves in the bedroom and weep uncontrollably?
The answer is probably not.
The Nutella makers have admitted that "inclement weather last spring in Turkey has impacted this year's hazelnut harvest," but the company is tracking the issue and doesn't see a "foreseeable impact on the availability of Nutella."
But excuse me while I go down to the supermarket and get a few jars of Nutella... you know, just in case.
