Aussie Instagram Celeb With Half A Million Followers Changes All Her Captions To Reflect ‘Real Life’
“Took over 100 in similar poses trying to make my stomach look good. Would have hardly eaten that day."
There’s a new kind of fame that Instagram celebrities have. Through selfies, outfit-of-the-day pics, #fitspo and flat-lays, girls are building a large following. Essena O’Neill did just that, and started when she was 15-years-old.
The now 18-year-old Aussie has half a million followers but has since quit social media with a powerful message to young girls, that social media is not real life.
Essena deleted 2000 posts, renamed her account and changed the captions on existing pics with a more truthful look at what was behind the photo.
She details about how she was paid to promote products, how she took hundreds of pics to get the right shot, and how insta-fame left her insecure and empty inside.
“I can’t tell you how free I feel without social media. Never again will I let a number define me. IT SUFFOCATED ME.”
As well as modifying her Instagram account, Essena posted a video to YouTube about how people make money off social media. She has moved the video from YouTube to Vimeo, where she now uploads daily videos because of its “positive and value based ranking, not likes or followers or BS ads.”
