The Girl Who Gave The World “On Fleek” Has Not Made Any Money From It
Your eyebrows are definitely on fleek.
What exactly does “eyebrows on fleek” mean? To make it simple, it’s probably the best compliment anyone can give you when it comes to the hair above your eyes.
But despite the viral nature of this strange phrase, the girl behind it actually has not profited from her creation at all.
The term “eyebrows on fleek” was invented by Kayla Newman aka Peaches Monroee, who uploaded a Vine in June 2014 featuring her saying, “We in this bitch. Finna get crunk. Eyebrows on fleek. Da fuq.”
“I gave the world a word,” Kayla told The Fader. “I can’t explain the feeling. At the moment I haven’t gotten any endorsements or received any payment. I feel that I should be compensated. But I also feel that good things happen to those who wait.”
The term quickly went viral, with the saying being picked up by everyone from your friend on the street to Ariana Grande. Who made this Vine:
Brands even started using it to sound young and hip.
But even though Kayla created something that went super viral, life hasn’t changed much. It’s incredibly hard for the average person to copyright a phrase, so she has no proof of ownership over the saying “on fleek”.
“Copyright law and intellectual property in America does not follow the creative production of artists. Rather, it protects the interests of companies,” Dana Nelson, founder of D.F. Nelson PLLC told The Fader. “I think it is now harder to distinguish a non-commercial (fair) use from a commercial one.”
It’s a fascinating tale of how Internet fame doesn’t necessarily lead to fortune. We hope Kayla is right and that good things come to those that wait!
A big milestone for the LGBT community
There’s no better way to spend your weekend than watching an entire season of a TV series.
So you’ve been forced to participate in an office Kris Kringle or Secret Santa.
