Now that’s thinking inside the box.
An Aussie athlete who couldn’t afford a plane ticket, came up with a cheaper way of getting home.
In 1964, Reg Spiers was training in London for the Tokyo Olympics. When injury struck the athlete and there was no hope of competing, he needed a way to get home.
Spiers built a wooden box fitted with straps to hold him in place, along with some tins of food, a torch, bedding and two bottles for water and relieving himself.
He surprisingly made it in one piece! Here’s what the box would have looked like on the inside:
