The Economist has released the annual cost of living report which highlights the most expensive cities in the world to live.

Singapore is the most expensive city in the world to live, however surprisingly Melbourne is becoming an expensive place to live - only one position behind Sydney at number five.

"10 years ago, both cities [Melbourne and Sydney] were cheaper than New York," it was revealed.

Sydney and Melbourne are almost identical when it comes to the cost of staples such as bread, fruit, vegetables and milk... oh, and of course wine.

The cost of petrol was $1.83 per litre in Sydney, while in Melbourne it was $1.82.

The cheapest places to live are Bangalore in India and Karachi in Pakistan.
