It is one of the most revered sites in Rome – which makes what a couple of America tourists did there all the more shocking!

Two tourists from California were arrested in the Italian capital over the weekend after they were allegedly caught vandalising international attraction, the Colosseum.

What makes the act even more ridiculous was that the female pair (aged 21 and 25) posted a selfie with their handy work to their social media.

La Stampa newspaper revealed that the women left their tour group and used a coin to engrave the letters J & N 3 inches high onto the walls of the World Heritage site.

The pair was spotted by other tourists who then reported them to security – with police at the scene charging the women with “aggravated damage on a building of historical and artistic interest.”

The women reportedly said at the time, “we apologize for what we did. We regret it, but we did not imagine it was something so serious.”

“We’ll remember for a lifetime.”

We bet they will! Remember kids, trashing World Heritage sites doesn’t make you cool!
