David Beckham’s Facebook Post Sparks Outrage In Vietnam
A controversial photo David Beckham posted online of a fan taking a picture of him has caused an uproar in Vietnam.
The photo depicted a woman in Hanoi snapping a sneaky pic of Beckham while riding a scooter without a helmet and carrying a young child between her knees.
The soccer star, who was on an Asian tour to promote a new brand of whisky, uploaded it to his official Facebook page on Friday with the caption, “I’m all for fans taking a picture but not sure this is the safest way to do it!”
The photo quickly sparked outrage in Vietnam and received heavy coverage in local media, with many newspapers pointing out that the woman was breaking the law.
The post has since had over 18,400 comments and many commentators were embarrassed by the image while others said sadly it’s common practice in Vietnam.
One newspaper quoted the chief of Hanoi’s Traffic Police as saying the woman could face a fine of 300,000 dong (around $A16) for not wearing a helmet and for using a mobile phone while driving.
About 14,000 people lose their lives on Vietnam roads every year so by bringing the issue to light, the controversy might actually have a positive impact.
