A new Barbie that’s challenging all the stereotypes has arrived… and never has there been a more realistic doll for sale.
Graphic designer-turned-toy-maker Nickolay Lamm created the brown-haired Lammily doll based on the measurements of an average 19-year-old woman’s body.
“Parents and their kids were emailing and asking where they could buy the ‘Normal Barbie’ — but they didn’t exist,” Lamm, 26, tells Time.
So he decided to do something about it and set out to raise $95,000 for the project through crowd funding but ended up with an impressive $501,000.
“I wanted to show that reality is cool,” Lamm says. “And a lot of toys make kids go into fantasy, but why don’t they show real life is cool? It’s not perfect, but it’s really all we have. And that’s awesome.”
He also made the following video that transforms a Lammily doll into a Barbie, just to get his point across.
Lammily: Time to Get Real
But wait, there’s more.
In January the new doll, which is already available for purchase and delivery for US$24.99, will come with an optional US$6.00 sticker extension pack which gives Lammily’s face acne, freckles, moles, and the ability to blush.
Lamm also decided to include scrapes and bruises, explaining, “We all get boo boos and scratches. Life isn’t perfect, we all sometimes fall down but we get back up.”
There are scar stickers as well, a recommendation by Lamm’s aunt, “Because, you know, some kids have scars and are really shy about them,” he says.
And it gets better… there’s even cellulite and stretch marks.
So there you have it, it doesn’t get much more realistic than that!
“This is the doll people have been waiting for,” Lamm says. And he’s not wrong.
