Tess Holliday is breaking all the rules as the first model of her size and height to get a major agency contract… and she even started her own movement!

UPDATE

Posting this article on Facebook seems to have sparked a bit of a debate, with some labelling Holliday unhealthy and others saying she’s an inspiration:

“There's a difference between plus size beautiful and obese. Shouldn't encourage unhealthy obesity. She's pretty but needs to lose so much weight,” - Rebecca

“How is a size 22 inspiring?” - Victoria

“Good on her! And it's negative, judgemental people... that make people hate them self (sic).” - Emma

“I doubt she’d be to phased (sic). She’ll be making the $$$$ you gooo girl xxxx” - Gina

Unlike other plus-size models who are typically between sizes 8 and 16 and a few inches taller, Holliday, real name Tess Munster, is a size 22 and 5-foot-5.

“I think we’re the only agency with a model of her size. She is by far the largest model I have in the [Curves] division,” said Anna Shillinglaw of MiLK Model Management, the agency that signed Holliday after seeing her on Instagram.

Holliday was bullied relentlessly as a child in Mississippi, forcing her to leave school at 17, and as a teen she was once told at a casting shoot she was was too short and too big to ever make it as a model… now she’s been named one of the top plus-sized models in the world by Vogue Italia and Refinery 29!

The stunning 29-year-old works out with a trainer four days a week but can’t quite understand why people have such a problem with her body, receiving up to hundreds of negative comments a day.

“Everybody deserves to be happy, but for some reason the fact that I happen to be plus size and happy seems to bother people,” she said. “It’s odd really.”

“I understand not everyone understands what I’m about. But to me it’s such a simple concept. It’s all about loving your body regardless of your size and chasing your dreams,” she added.

And Holliday is inspiring women around the world after starting the #EffYourBeautyStandards movement, which encourages women to love their bodies, no matter their size.

Pretty for a big girl... Nah, I'm just pretty. #effyourbeautystandards

But the blogger and body-positive activist admits she is still blown away by her success and all the support she receives from women everywhere.

“It doesn’t feel like it’s me. Every time I have a big thing happen in my career, it’s an out of body experience,” she said.

“I’m always still that 13-year-old girl in Mississippi who people told I wasn’t good enough. I never could have imagined that I could be here.”

Does it bother you that a fat body like mine exists in the world? That this body makes me money, brings my partner (& myself) joy & for some of you, is your "worst case scenario"? Heaven forbid. Fuck what you've heard about me. I'm not going anywhere💪 #tessmunster #tessholliday #effyourbeautystandards

And she has one very important message for women:

“Surround yourself with positive, like-minded people who support you. It’s crucial to your happiness and well-being. Never compare yourself to others and celebrate what makes you, YOU.”
