The Facebook Emoji That Sparked Worldwide Outrage To Be Changed

Facebook has been forced to replace one its newest emojis after it was slammed for promoting online body shaming.

Catherine Weingarten from Endangered Bodies started a petition last month to have the "feeling fat" emoji removed, saying "fat is not a feeling" and use of a "chubby emoticon with a double chin" would be harmful to people with eating disorders and would "encourage negative body image."

"When Facebook users set their status to 'feeling fat,' they are making fun of people who consider themselves to be overweight, which can include many people with eating disorders," the US university student told ABC News.

There are more than 100 "feelings" people can use when updating their status on Facebook.

Since the hashtag #FatIsNotaFeeling and the petition (which has nearly 17,000 signatures) took off on social media, Facebook has decided to change to emoji to "feeling stuffed."

"We've heard from our community that listing 'feeling fat' as an option for status updates could reinforce negative body image, particularly for people struggling with eating disorders," MoMo Zhou, spokeswoman for the social network giant, said in a statement.

"So we're going to remove 'feeling fat' from the list of options."

Was Facebook right to change the emoji or are we taking it too seriously? Let us know in the poll below and on our Facebook page.
