The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has revealed that Waylon Smithers, Mr. Burns' loyal assistant in the show, originally started out life with a darker skin tone than the trademark Simpson yellow.

Groening says the character was always intended to be yellow, but in the early days of low budgets and limited resources, they made an oversight.

“He was always yellow, and they painted him wrong once,” Groening told TMZ.

“At the time we didn’t have enough (money) to do retakes, so when there were glitches and mistakes it stayed that way.

“He was never ‘black’, it was an accident.”
