MasterChef Trumps Political Debate
OK so now we know!
Australian pollies should be competing in the kitchen if they want our attention.
With our election looming and the politics starting to heat up, an average of 1 million more Australians tuned into the MasterChef final than the (not so) Great Debate which also had the advantage of being televised over three channels. 5.2 Million cheered as Adam Liaw become the 2010 MasterChef winner, whilst 4.28 million hung on our leaders every word.
Maybe if Abbot and Gillard donned aprons and whisked up fluffy omelettes rather than dish out uninspired, carefully practiced political spin we might be more interested.
Julia may have worked hard all her life to avoid the duties of a housewife and Tony may have surrounded himself with strong women who take care of all that for him but it looks like it is time to get their hands dirty.
Tony, Julia, I challenge you both to a pressure test. Recipe below!
Bean and Smoked Pork Belly Soup
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil
1 cup speck (fat removed and diced 1cm)
2 carrot peeled and diced finely
3 stick celery finely diced
2 clove garlic finely chopped
¼ cabbage finely sliced
2 potato peeled and diced 1cm
1 ltr chicken stock
400g diced tomatoes (fresh or tinned)
400g canned cannellini beans rinsed
400g canned chick peas rinsed
Black pepper
Olive oil and parmesan to serve
Method
Heat olive oil in a heavy based saucepan. Add the vegetables, garlic and speck and toss over medium heat until the cooking process has begun. Place the stock, tomatoes and cannellini beans in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the stock mixture to the saucepan with the vegetables. Bring the soup up to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour. Add chickpeas and cook for a further 10 minutes. Serve topped with a splash of olive oil and some grated parmesan.
