Kick Ass!

Starring Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnston, Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be a superhero?

High school nerd Dave Lizewski has. Despite the minor details that he has neither super powers, nor weaponry to undertake the task he does so anyway. The results are both predictable and hilarious.

After the forays of real superheroes 'Hit Girl' and 'Big Daddy' are mistaken for those of Dave's alter ego 'Kick Ass', the wannabe crime fighter finds himself in a spot of bother. The son of crime lord Frank D'Amico transforms himself into a mock super hero called 'Red Mist' and lures 'Kick Ass' out of hiding.

'Kick Ass' is not for the light-hearted. If the sight of an eleven year old, girl, superhero dropping the 'c bomb' whilst carving up baddies with her butterfly knives and swords sound a little much for you to stomach, well that is just the start of it.

The film is a high octane mix of black comedy, bad language, gratuitous violence and nods to superheroes from the past. This is not a film for the kiddies, and certainly not one for the grandparents. For a seriously funny, completely irresponsible night at the cinema 'Kick Ass' is very hard to beat.

Five Stars.

Date Night

Starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey

Claire and Phil Foster are living in married bliss, well not really, more like married mundane. The spark in the marriage comes in the form of dinner and movie dates once a week. When they decide to change it up a little and head to a trendy Manhattan bistro, and steal someone else's reservation, they get a lot more than they bargained for.

An innocent night on the town turns into a dash for their lives with gangsters and crooked cops on their tails. The pressure of making a super funny film is well and truly on comedic talents Steve Carell ('The Forty Year Old Virgin') and Tina Fey ('TV's 30 Rock'). Thankfully, they have not disappointed.

The premise of the film, the mistaken identity, is one of film's oldest and most enduring topics. Into the mix are some lessons about the perils of long term relationships that go stale. Together the two ideas make a highly enjoyable backdrop for a very funny, easy going romantic comedy.

To really make the film as user friendly as possible, the running time falls just under one and a half hours, making it short and sweet. 'Date Night' is highly recommended for anyone seeking a nice non-confronting night at the movies.

Four Stars.
