Today is a very sad day for the people of Sydney, and in particular those that do their best to protect us from crime.

Constable WILLIAM "BILL" CREWS lost his life at the tender age of 26, while carrying out his job during a dangerous operation at Bankstown last week.

Today thousands of Sydneysiders will farewell William at his funeral which will be held at St Andrew's cathedral.

I think we should all take time out today to go up to a member of the police service and simply say "thank you".

The vast majority of police put their lives at risk ever day for us, and often abused by drunks or attacked by junkies or criminals.

Today we should take time out, and think about where society would be without the men and women of the police force.

They are the people who have to break up bloody fights, recover stolen cars, diffuse bombs, solve murders, investigate horrific rapes and break tragic news to distraught family members.

It's really easy to criticise the police, but imagine what life would be like without them?

My heart goes out to the family and colleagues of Constable Bill Crews who died on the job while trying to uphold the law.

Rest in peace.

Leave your tributes below.

It is such a sad tragedy, his poor family and friends I can't imagine what they would be going through.

Geoff you're very right in your comments about our understanding and appreciation of the police force, until we are in a situation where we are in direct contact with them we don't appreciate what they go through to keep our streets as safe as they are. This is an awful eye opener to people, one that should not be forgotten. The tribute he received yesterday truly shows what a hero he is.

My thoughts go out to his family, friends and colleagues at this time.

My heart goes out to William's family and friends. He was taken from this world too soon, but he left doing what he loved. He will forever be regarded by me as a true symbol of dedication. I have a complete respect for our men and women that risk their lives daily to keep our communities safe. I issue my condolences in this very difficult time.
